BINTULU: Strict security measures will be taken to ensure acts of vandalism at the Kemunting Muslim Cemetery are not repeated.

Chairman of the Bintulu Islamic Welfare Trust Board (LAKIB) Datuk Talib Zulpilip stressed that acts of vandalism at the Muslim cemetery involved are unacceptable.

He encouraged the public to report any unusual activity they witnessed in the cemetery to the relevant authorities without delay.

Talib, who is also the Jepak assemblyman, thanked the police department here for the arrest of two suspects related to trespassing and treachery in 51 graves at the cemetery.

“I have to thank the police, the villagers and their chief for their swift action,” he said.

Following the incident, he believed the people would be more alert of their surroundings and watch out for any unhealthy activities.

Meanwhile, Bintulu police chief Supt Batholomew Umpit on Thursday confirmed the arrest of the second suspect on Wednesday (July 26).

He said the two suspects, in their 40s, will be investigated under Section 297/427 of the Penal Code for trespassing on burial grounds.

Last Monday, the police received information about a case of trespassing and treachery by spraying red and blue paints at the Kemunting Muslim Cemetery in Jalan Sebiew, at 7.15 am.

Intelligence and public information led to the arrest of a 40-year-old local male suspect to assist in the investigation.
