KUCHING: Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) is carrying out several development initiatives for the tourism and hospitality sector.

Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Abdul Aziz Husain said this included the refurbishment of the Riverside Majestic Hotel and Damai Lagoon Resort.

“In addition, SEDC and UDA Holding Bhd (UDA) are also constructing a new hotel in Pending. This is part of the state’s Transit Oriented Development.

“Besides that, we are also looking forward to the implementation of the Damai Master Plan. The final report will be ready by next month.”

Abdul Aziz was speaking during SEDC’s 50th anniversary dinner, which was also attended by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Riverside Majestic Hotel here, Monday (July 4) evening.

He noted that SEDC’s foray into the quarry and mining business was also bearing fruit and would play a significant role in providing materials for the state’s infrastructure projects.

“In the agro sector, we have acquired Carmor Plains in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia to complement SEDC’s Rosewood Cattle Station resulting in higher productivity.

“Our new ventures include a corned beef processing factory next to the new abattoir, and a feed factory for the production of feed for cattle and poultry.”

He added that he had completed over five years of service as SEDC chairman and was honoured and proud to be part of the team entrusted by the Premier to plan and set up various small and mega projects such as the Kuching Urban Transportation System, utilising the Autonomous Rail Transit or ART system, which runs on hydrogen.

“Moreover, other mega projects include the Petchem Industrial Park in Bintulu, the methanol plant in Bintulu also, the multi-fuel stations and our new foray into renewable energy such as the production of green hydrogen and biofuel.”

On that note, he said SEDC’s vision was to become one of the best organisations in the country as well as be known for quality products, services and work commitment.
