KAJANG: The police can still conduct investigations under the Sedition Act 1948 because the law has not been repealed, Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today.
He said the police will investigate cases under the act at their discretion.
“I have asked the police to use the act prudently and to make sure that there is a strong basis for using the act in their investigations,” he told reporters after attending the 229th Prisons Day celebration at the Prisons Academy of Malaysia here.
Also present were Deputy Home Minister Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman and Prisons director-general Datuk Seri Zulkifli Omar.
Muhyiddin said the government is considering whether the Sedition Act is still relevant or has to be amended.
“The study is in the final stage. Several matters have been identified that do not have to be applied in the act,” he said.
On another matter, he said the government plans to raise to RM200 the Special Incentive Payment for prison staff, like in the case of other uniformed forces.
“We (Home Ministry) will try to implement this and hope the Finance Ministry gives the approval as the total amount is not big,” he said. –Bernama
