SIBU: The Sibu Division Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) welcomes feedback from the public pertaining to the reopening of schools.

During the daily Covid-19 update for Sibu Division via Facebook, its coordinator Dr Annuar Rapaee said that he had received many messages from the public, especially from parents, who wanted the schools to close again after the current semester break which ends on April 3.

“I have received many messages from the public recommending that the schools stay closed, but there is no suggestion on when the school should reopen,” said Dr Annuar, who is also the Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing.

He said, although he took note of the parents’ opinion, he still needs a general public opinion on whether the school should reopen so that the authorities could resolve the pros and cons of the impact of school reopening.

“Therefore, give us suggestions so that we can talk to teachers, headmasters, principals as well as the Parent-Teachers Association.

“We are open to discussion. I really want to know personally from the public when the school should reopen.

“If we say ‘schools can only be opened when Covid-19 records zero cases’ or ‘schools can only be opened when Sibu turns into a green zone’, that kind of opinion does not suggest that schools should not be opened,” said the Assistant Minister of Education, Science and the Technology Research.

Dr Annuar said Sibu DDMC would hold a meeting to discuss this matter more thoroughly and in depth before deciding whether the school should reopen or otherwise.

Commenting on the 40 cases reported in Sibu today, the Nangka assemblyman said 38 of them were from the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) area and the rest were from the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) and Sibu Jaya zones respectively.

“Although there are 38 cases in the SMC area, there are no more red zones in our zoning area in Sibu. There are now five orange zones, two greens and 27 yellows out of a total of 34 zones,” he said.

He added that however, the concern is on the nine cases reported in the Bukit Lima zone, namely in Jalan Lanang where cases emerged from several groups living together.
