SIBU: Members of the public are seeing red when some traders at the commercial shophouses in Selanggau Bazaar displayed their goods on the five-foot ways of their shops.

As it has caused much inconvenience, the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) which received the complaint said such act may cause severe obstructions to Fire and Rescue Department in the event of a fire.

SRDC chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai said such irresponsible attitude should change and reminded them to comply with the policy on the display of goods in the five-foot ways of the commercial shophouses in Selanggau.

“This policy was formulated after detailed discussions with the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Selanggau in 2020. In other words, it is a consensus reached between SRDC and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Selanggau and came into effect on Jan 1 this year,” he said in a statement here yesterday (Feb 25).

Offenders will face a maximum fine of RM3,000 or an imprisonment up to nine months or both under Section 26 (1) of Cleanliness By-laws under of the Local Authority Ordinance 1996.

The monthly charge for the usage of 50 per cent of the footway is RM100 and RM50 for usage below than 50 per cent while for the corner lot the charge is RM100.

The selling, keeping or storing of livestock, organic and non-organic fertilisers along the five-foot way is strictly prohibited. – Bernama
