SIBU: A senior citizen, 66, is believed to have suffered a loss of RM30,000 after he became a victim of the Macau Scam.

Sibu District Police Chief, ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit disclosed that the victim received a short message service (sms) from 6886 regarding a credit card charge from one of the banks and was asked to call the telephone number 1800816112.

“A woman responded to the complainant’s (victim) call and read out his identity card number. She told him his identity card had been misused by a third party to register for a credit card.

“The complainant denied having the bank credit card. He then received a call from a nominee using the telephone number 03-92121850, supposedly from Bank Negara.

“The call told the complainant to go to the ATM machine of one of the banks and follow instructions for the purpose of changing the bar code behind his ATM card so that his card details would not be misused,” Stanley told reporters here yesterday.

He added that on the same day, the victim, after checking the balance of his account, found that RM30,000 had been transferred to a third-party account.

“The complainant has yet to check the receiver’s account number from the bank,” he said.

He said that the suspects’ modus operation was to deceive the victim into making a money transfer to solve a non-existent credit card problem.
