KUCHING: It was a nightmare for Fatimah Johari to witness her home turned to ashes right before her eyes and not being able to do anything about it.

Fatimah, one of the victims of the fire at Kampung Sungai Bedil here, said in all her 74 years, yesterday’s incident was her worst nightmare ever.

In the incident which took place around 3pm, five homes were burned, resulting in 23 residents from seven families homeless.

Fatimah said she was getting ready to take a shower when she smelled the smell of burnt rubber.

RAZING HOT FIRE… The fire razed five houses.

“But before I could think even further, my daughter came budging in telling me that the house was on fire.

“It was my daughter who helped me get out of the burning house because I was in a state of shock and could not do anything.

“I was unable to save important documents because the incident happened so fast,” Fatimah said when met by reporters.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Petra Jaya station chief Azaharul Sahari said they were still investigating the cause of the fire.

He said firefighters from Bomba Petra Jaya, Bomba Padungan and Bomba Tabuan Jaya put out the blaze, but not before it had burnt the five houses.
