BAU: The Serembu constituency will be developed into a main paddy plantation area for this district.

Its assemblyman Miro Simuh said a 600-acre swamp land has been identified in a combined area of Kampung Sekunyit, Kampung Peninjau and Kampung Segak to open up paddy fields.

“For the first allocation of RM500,000, it will be used to carry out irrigation project. For the second project, the land will be cleared and relevant departments will step in to assist the participants from these villages to develop this area for the paddy plantation,” he said when speaking to the press after officiating at the closing ceremony of the Agriculture Community Outreach Programme (AgriCOP) 2020 in Kampung Kandis Lama Hall here on Monday (Dec 14).

Apart from that, he said a cattle rearing facility will also be developed in a 120-acre land in Kampung Merembeh.

He said an allocation of RM500,000 has also been granted for land clearing, irrigation and other related early implementation projects.

“After that is done, we will begin planting Indian Napier grass, one of the most durable species of grass that contains high amount of protein for the cattle. To begin the breeding process, some 100 heads of cattle will be brought onto the farm which will then be multiplied from year to year,” he said.

Miro added that the construction of the project is expected to commence next year as preparation for basic infrastructures including the setting up of a road, land learning and grass planting is ongoing.

“Next year, we will bring in these cows and we are expecting about 600 to 700 cows in three years,” he said, adding that the project currently has 32 participants involved.

He also said the feedlot programme for cattle rearing would cost about RM1.5 million minimum together with all the facilities and irrigation systems.

Asked on the response from local dwellers here on its agricultural initiatives, Miro said the participation and acceptance from the people has been satisfactory.

“In every village, the response has been good. They’re willing to learn and do it. So, our next step is to assist them to achieve success,” he added.
