KUCHING: Several initiatives have been identified by the Sarawak government in improving the education rights of stateless children.
Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah stated that the initiatives, including the special committee officer to prevent the issue of Sarawakians who are stateless, the development of community learning centre at various palm oil land, and the establishment of research titled “A Comprehensive Study on the Causative Factors Leading to Stateless Children in Sarawak”.
“This also include the Randau Social Development Programme (RPS), which is the advocation programme on the importance of identification document, other related issues and ways to prevent the problems at identified hotspots.”
She said this after attending the discussion titled “Perbincangan Meja Bulat: Hak Pendidikan Kanak-Kanak Pelarian dan Tanpa Kewarganegaraan” organised by the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) together with the Asia Displacement Solution Platform (ADSP) and European Humanitarian Union Aid on yesterday (May 10).
She added that over 24 RPS programmes had been planned this year.
“I hope that this initiative with give a chance to individuals that deserve a chance to gain access to education, health service, job opportunities and legal marriage status.”
