SIBU: Several police officers have been infected with Covid-19 while carrying out the task of monitoring public compliance of the standard operating procedures (SOPs) here.

Sibu district police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit today said these officers had also infected their family members.

He advised his officers to always comply with the SOPs and to use personal protective equipment (PPE) fully while on duty.

Stanley revealed that a senior police officer is still being treated in the intensive care unit at Sibu Hospital after being infected with the virus on April 23.

However, he explained that the officer also had other health problems.

Stanley added that the last time the officer led the monitoring of SOP compliance team was on April 22.

“Let us together pray that he recovers quickly. We know the risk as a frontline non-medical staff is very high.

“Apart from monitoring the SOPs, the police also carried out the burials of Covid-19 patients.  We’re very vulnerable to this virus,” he said.

Stanley added that some police officers who were infected before had recovered.

He reminded his officers to always be vigilant when carrying out their responsibilities.

He urged them to always wear face masks during operations and to wear PPE if in situations where exposure to Covid-19 might be higher.

Stanley revealed that almost all police officers here had completed both doses of their vaccine shots.

While dealing with the death of a Covid-19 patient, Stanley said that every police officer assigned to the matter must wear full PPE before handling the remains.

“The current Covid-19 situation needs additional prevention as my team might face any case of sudden death at Sibu Hospital,” he added.
