MIRI: The shortage of teachers in Industrial Training Institute (ILP) Miri is at a “severe” point, compared to their counterparts in West Malaysia, said Human Resource Minister M Kula Segaran.

Kula also revealed that his ministry would look into the issue, during a press conference at Miri ILP in Senadin, yesterday.

“That is why I came here, so that we can come up with a coherent plan or mechanism to tackle the issues.

“ILP is one of our technical and vocational education training (TVET) centres and is essential in the human resource development of our country,” Kula said.

Currently, ILP Miri has 67 teaching staff serving nearly 500 students.

“I was told that the institute is short of 20 teaching staff to ensure full capacity.

“Perhaps one of the solutions that we can look into is to not make the hiring process too strict,” he said.

Also present were Malaysia Manpower Department (JTM) director Datuk Muhd Khair Razman Mohamad Annuar, ILP Miri director Dr Rosnah Muhamad Tahir, Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon and Palawan assemblyman Palawan David Wong.

On another matter, Kula refused to comment on rumours regarding the replacement of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) chairman’s post which is currently held by Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
