SIBU: The upgrading of the 3-km Sungai Maaw Road at the cost of RM1 million was scheduled for completion yesterday.

Second Minister of Finance Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said the Public Works Department (JKR) had been resurfacing and upgrading low-lying stretches of Sungai Maaw Road to prevent the road from being flooded during high tide.

“Sungai Maaw Road was always flooded during heavy rains and high tide.
Certain sections of the road need to be upgraded despite being done so many times,” he said.

The upgrading of the road at the cost of RM1 million was scheduled to be completed yesterday, Wong told reporters when inspecting the upgrading work of road on the West Bank here yesterday.

He was accompanied by Sibu JKR technician, Yong Sin Ho.

On the road in Sungai Sadit, Wong, who is Bawang Assan State Assemblyman, said RM1.2 million had been allocated for the upgrading and resurfacing of the 6-km road.

“We have completed about 50 per cent of the upgrading of the road in Sungai Sadit,” he said, adding that the road would be tar-sealed soon.

After the upgrading of the road in Sungai Sadit is completed, he said roads in other areas, namely, in Sungai Empawah, Tanjung Kunyit, Peradom, Engkilo and Sungai Bidut would also be upgraded at the cost of between RM6 million and RM7 million.

“All roads in the areas will be upgraded. Many others have been tar-sealed. I have said that after the state election, we would slowly tar-seal all the roads in these areas.

“I also promised that we would tar-seal the road in Sungai Sadit first. After Sungai Sadit, we will move to the other areas one at a time. What we have promised, we will deliver,” said Wong.
