KOTA SAMARAHAN: A Shell desk under the Chief Minister’s Office will be established to facilitate Shell Malaysia’s decision to move its operations office to Miri, drawing in its staff members from Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the desk would accommodate matters such as immigration processes and work permits for the company’s staff members.

“Their staff comprises mostly expatriates and non-Sarawakians, and they have approximately 2,000 existing staff members,” he said during a press conference at the Samarahan Division ‘Leader with the People’ session at Kota Samarahan Civic Centre today after attending the State Development Coordination Committee meeting for Samarahan Division.

He said that this move reflected Shell’s confidence in Sarawak and the state government.

He noted that foreign companies were keen to invest in Sarawak, such as the recent investment by Japanese companies Sumitomo Corporation and ENEOS into the development of Bintulu Hydrogen Plant.

“If our state is in turmoil, these investors would not come to Sarawak. But when they see that our state is peaceful and the state government is good, they decide to come here, meaning we can increase our state’s revenue.”

He emphasised that this stable state government must be preserved.

Abang Johari said Shell Malaysia’s move would result in an economic boom while also creating jobs.

“The state government will accommodate this move as we are also going to do our own exploration in Miri under Petros as well.”
