KOTA SAMARAHAN: Many perpetrators of domestic violence get away with their vile actions, usually feeling no guilt at all.

Their victims, on the other hand, are trapped in a vicious cycle, their sense of worth shattered. If they leave a toxic relationship, where can they go? With the new construction of Rumah Seri Kenangan (RKS), Welfare, Community Well-Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah had hoped the building would provide much-needed shelter for women who are victims of domestic violence.

“Featuring eight units consisting of two rooms each, dining room as well as counselling service, this temporary shelter hopes to provide support and give a sense of security to victims,” the minister said during a visit to the new building here.

She added that it was necessary to give protection to victims and kept them and children away from the perpetrators.

“It begins in the home, where children should be raised to be aware that aggression and abusive behaviour cross the line. Women must realise their worth, seek protection at safe places like RKS,” she asserted.

Fatimah gave her assurance that the construction of the new RSK costing RM12 million would be the best and safe place.

“We are expecting to fully operate the RSK Kuching early next year.

“Comprehensive shelter services, which include social work and counselling, can help to save women’s lives,” she added.
