BINTULU: Sherry Bulin and Rochester Lenno Ganti were selected as the Kumang and Keling respectively at the state-level 2022 Keling Raban Ngeban Iban (RNI) event which took place at Dinner World Restaurant, here, on Saturday night.

With the victory, Sherry will be the 2022 RNI Ambassador for one year.

Both Sherry and Rochester went home with prizes worth RM5,000 each including a crown, a trophy, a sash, an education sponsorship worth RM15,000 and several other sponsored prizes.

The second place in the Kumang category with the Lulong title was won by Diyamirza Nantai David, 21; she took home a cash prize worth RM3,000, an education sponsorship worth RM10,000 and other sponsored prizes.

The third place which carried the title of Selinggar Matahari was captured by Stephy Sharon Saging. She took home a cash prize worth RM 2,000 and an education sponsorship worth RM7,000.

Meanwhile, second in the Keling category was a participant from Limbang, Joshua Amir Sibat, 27, who carried the title of Laja while the third place, carrying the title of Bungai Nuing, was won by Timothy Nang, 28.

Joshua received a cash prize worth RM3,000 and an education sponsorship of RM10,000 while Timothy went home with a cash prize worth RM2,000 and an education sponsorship worth RM7,000.

Joshua was also selected as the winner of the ‘Keling Pengelandik Main Iban Asal’ and ‘Keling Pemadu Mentas’ categories, thus qualifying him to take home cash prizes worth RM500 and RM100.

Eight women and 11 men competed in the competition which was attended by representative to Bintulu MP, Ukar Kelayang, Penghulu Enggah Nuga and Pertubuhan Belia Dayak Sarawak (PEBEDAS) vice president Martin Saba Changgai.

Meanwhile, the president of RNI Miri, Steven Abas Patrick Agus hoped that young Dayaks would join hands in upholding their customs and culture by using the right channels or platforms.

RNI, he said, was one of the best mediums that should be supported by youth to dignify art and culture in this state.

“It is my great hope that this prestigious RNI event will later be included in the tourism calendar of the state of Sarawak. This will further elevate the art and promote the traditional costumes and unique accessories of the Iban people at the national and international levels,” he said.
