Shophouse blaze affects three businesses

SIBU: Three business were left badly damaged following a fire outbreak at a two-storey shophouse along Jalan Lebuh Tinggi on Tuesday night (Feb 20).

Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported in the 8.13pm incident.

It was understood that the fire affected a food store, a shoe shop and a hair salon.

Sibu Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 4 chief Andy Alie said that firemen from Sibu and Sungai Merah stations were dispatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call.

Upon arrival, the extinguishing deed was promptly performed using a long ladder and water sourced from a nearby fire hydrant.

“The flames, which had caused 70 percent damages to the shophouse, were brought under control around 9.35pm.

“Overhaul works were carried out to ensure that there is no risk of reignition before the operation ended at 11.20pm,” he said.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred is still under investigation.
