Short-lived ‘freedom’ for escaping Covid-19 patient

The male patient who escaped from SGH being apprehended less than five hours later by a special police team at Jalan Patinggi Ali, in Satok.

KUCHING: A Covid-19 patient who escaped from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) on Sunday morning, was caught by police at Jalan Patinggi Ali, in Satok.

Earlier at around 9.30 am, a nurse found that the 28-year-old man had gone missing from the ward thus, prompting a report to the police.

District police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah who confirmed the incident, said a special team was formed upon receiving report from the hospital’s management.

“The team led by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Intelligence Operations officer ASP Baharudin and assisted by several police stations, were despatched to locate the patient.

“After receiving tip-off, the patient was successfully apprehended around 1.55 pm by the special team along with Bintawa policemen by the roadside at Jalan Patinggi Ali in Satok,” he stated.

He added that the patient was later handed over to the Ministry of Health (MOH) for further action.

An investigation paper has been opened under Section 269 of the Penal Code and Section 22(B) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.
