KUCHING: The state government may extend the Sia Sitok domestic intra state tourism campaign following its encouraging reception.
“We are contemplating on extending it as Sia Sitok will run its course by the end of December.
“Yesterday (Thursday), during the Cabinet meeting, I was asked to ensure that more people visit our local tourism spots,” said Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah during a Facebook Live session today.
He said Sia Sitok was well-received by Sarawakians as the scheme offered numerous discounts through its 30 subsidised tourism packages.
“Sia Sitok was launched back in August and is to last until the end of the year. Within it there are 30 packages for Sarawakians.
“The discount offered is up to 50 per cent exclusive to Sarawakians where they can go sightseeing in Mulu, Bako and enjoy sunset cruises.
“We were quite surprised as the response was overwhelming and it is good that locals are visiting our tourist spots.”
Abdul Karim, who is also Youth and Sports Minister, said Covid-19 was a blessing in disguise as with it, more focus was given to domestic tourism.
“We have many locals who like travelling, hiking, and fishing. At least the money is spent in the state until such time when everything eventually cools down.
“When the money is moving internally, our tourism products are selling, this is a good thing.”
