SIBU: The readiness of agencies related to disaster and rescue operations was put to the test on Thursday (Jan 20).

Sibu acting OCPD Supt Collin Babat gave his approval and said the agencies were ready to face the possibility of floods or any other disaster after reviewing the flood disaster simulation held at Taman Tasik Permai here.

He also explained that the opening of the Temporary Evacuation Centre (PPS) would be determined by the Sibu District Office while the rescue team would be led by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM).

“Among the locations of the PPS that have been proposed include SMK Deshon, SMK Bukit Assek and Dewan Kampung Jeriah.”

On the exercise, he said: “Ops Permai was held in conjunction with the Sibu 2022 In-Service Exercise (LDP) involving all agencies under the Sibu Divisional Disaster Management Committee (DDMC).”

“The exercise is to test the preparedness and ability of agencies under Sibu DDMC during flooding incidents,” he added.

Among the agencies involved were the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB), Civil Defense Force (APM), Ministry of Health (MoH), Sibu Resident’s Office, the Malaysian Armed Froce (ATM) and Social Welfare Department (JKM).
