SIBU: Sibu’s Central Market — built in 1996 on Jalan Channel opposite the Express Boat Passenger Terminal — is one of the the largest and most interesting markets to visit.

By combining the former wet market and the native Lembangan market in a cleaner and more hygienic surrounding, the area contains a wide range of stalls selling various vegetables, fruits, meat, and general merchandise.

Highlights include the Iban ladies selling exotic fruits, jungle produce and handicrafts, and the Chinese poultry sellers who offer their live chickens and ducks neatly wrapped in tubes fashioned from old newspapers.

The market can be reached from the Sibu Express Boat Terminal with a 10 to 15-minute walk. If you are hungry, you can explore the first floor of the market with a wide variety of food to choose from such as kolok mee, kampua mee, and other local dishes. Terubuk fish or Sarawak kek lapis (layer cake) are also sold at reasonable prices which can be brought back as gifts for family and friends.

It is worth it to explore the market where you can not only find goods that can’t be found anywhere else, but to also experience a local way of life and to try the local food.
