SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh slammed the act of some people who thronged the Sibu Central Market on Sunday morning (Jan 24).

He said the traffic on Jalan Lebuh Tinggi (the route to Sibu Central Market) was congested where people were seen buying goods and necessities in the market.

“With the Covid-19 situation still spreading in this town, the Sibu Central Market is suddenly crowded this morning,” he said here today.

He stressed that the people should avoid such crowded places.

He explained that the people of Sibu should have a high awareness as well as feel worried about the current situation and avoid rushing to buy their necessities.

“Our cases here are not declining, but increasing day by day. I wonder why some people are still stubborn and unaware,” he said when expressing his displeasure with the congestion that occurred at the Sibu Central Market.

However, Ting was relieved when the police arrived to monitor the market to prevent and reduce the presence of the public by tightening the enforcement of the movement control order (MCO) standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“Police are taking stricter action against those who are crowding the market by ordering them to leave.

“I am glad that the police are enforcing a stricter SOP,” Ting said.

He stressed that people need to reduce their movement to mitigate the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
