SIBU: Police recorded a significant drop in crime cases in the district last year.

Acting Sibu police chief Supt Dr Collin Babat said compared to 2020 when the district recorded 807 crime cases there were only 560 crime cases last year.

It amounted to a reduction by 247 cases.

“The success in reducing the crime index was the result of close cooperation between the different units in the police force.

“However, commercial crime cases are on the rise,” he said during the Sibu Police Headquarters monthly assembly on Monday (Jan 17).

Collin said there was a slight increase in commercial crime cases with a total of 359 cases recorded last year and 152 of them were brought to court.

In 2020, there was a total of 286 cases and 172 were referred to the courts.

“Hence, the public also needs to be more vigilant and know about crime prevention through awareness campaigns that we have conducted,” he said.
