SIBU: Residents here again have been warned against being complacent despite the town listed as Covid-19 green — for the second time.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting, hoping to ensure this remains, said what with many residents still returning, the public in this town should maintain several practices.

These included social distancing, avoiding places with no SOP (standard operating procedure), keeping hands clean, living a healthy lifestyle, and wearing face masks when out in public places.

Ting said the tireless efforts of the SDMC (State Disaster Management Committee) in ensuring a safe Sarawak had produced results.

“After slightly over two months, we only have three yellow zones left and three positives throughout the state as of today,” he noted.

He said initially when businesses were allowed to resume operations on May 12, they had SOPs in place but many in this town did not follow in the beginning, causing them to experience slow business.

“…but adjustments were made to follow the SOPs. Now I see more people are in those coffee shops that follow the SOPs strictly.

“I see people obligingly registering, getting temperature checked with no fuss and reaching out to sanitise their hands,” he said.

He also noticed that the public were largely still wary, going only to places deemed hygienic.

“In 10 weeks, we have unconsciously changed our hygiene awareness, change our way of social engagement, change our habits. I believe this will continue for years to come.”

Ting commended the enforcement of the movement control order, and he believed that with the majority support “we are able to slow the rate of infection across the country”.
