SIBU: The area for the farmers around Sibu Jaya to sell their agricultural products will be relocated to the rear part of the new market instead of the front sections.

The Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) in a statement today said that the original plan was to utilise the rear area as a parking lot and the front area as a stall for agricultural products trading.

However, after one month of implementation, it was found that the initial idea will lead to traffic jams and heavy traffic, which made it inconvenient for consumers and hawkers unhappy.

“After on-site investigation, the councillors unanimously agreed to change the rear section to hawker stalls and the front section to a parking lot, which will be implemented in October this year,” said the statement.

The councillors and council staff from the Business Licensing Team’s visit to the new market centre in Sibu Jaya was led by SRDC deputy chairman cum Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Dudong Branch chairman Wong Ching Yong.

During the inspection, they also visited the old market centre.

“Many consumers have complained to the SRDC that some stall operators are occupying public corridors, causing congestion on the sidewalks.

“After the councillors communicated with the relevant hawkers, the hawkers concerned agreed to abide by the regulations.

“The Sibu Rural District Council will draw a red line on the pavement, and hawkers who sell their goods outside the red line will be fined,” said the statement.
