SIBU: So, you want to be a member of parliament (MP) for Sibu? But there is a condition, which is, the elected representative must make sure to highlight the existence of Sibu and the problems faced by the town in Parliament.

As it is, apparently Malayans don’t seem to know Sibu exists.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting said people who want to represent Sibu need to be aware of this condition as the main objective and task of the MP is to get Putrajaya to improve federal services in Sibu as there are many services that need to be upgraded.

“Our purpose is to improve federal services in Sibu. So that they won’t ‘lupa’ (forget) Sibu. Whoever is elected to Parliament, this person must be able to shout the name of Sibu loud and clear,” he said.

Ting was speaking to reporters after officiating at the opening ceremony of the 2022 Borneo Palliative Care Conference on behalf of Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, today (Oct 28).

Ting recalled that a recent announcement by Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa revealed that more than 300 sites have been identified for this year by the federal government for the implementation and rollout of the 5G network in Sarawak.

He said Sibu is being left out as far as internet connectivity is concerned, while the emphasis is on Kuching, Miri and Bintulu.

“This is very sad. How can Sibu, as a town, be without 5G coverage when other places have the service? This is because ‘Semenanjung’ already ‘lupa’ where Sibu is,” he said.

Meanwhile, asked for his opinion about fielding a candidate from the other Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) component parties in Sibu, Ting who is tipped as a potential candidate for the Sibu parliamentary seat in the Nov 19 general election, he said he will give his full support to whoever is nominated for the seat.

“If that decision is made by GPS president (Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg), I think being part of the GPS I will fully support the move.

“We are a team and we will get the nominated candidate elected because it’s not about me, it’s about Sibu,” he said.
