SIBU: It is about time to have a permanent drag race track here, says Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.

“It is still in the proposal stage at the Ministry for Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development. As you see this event gets a very good response from the youth.

“Today (they can race) only for the competition, (on normal day) they will need permission from the authority for safety measure.

“So, I am trying to convince the ministry (for a drag race track),” he said when met by reporters after officiating at the opening ceremony of Sibu Drag Race 2022 at the old airport yesterday.

On the event, the Nangka Assemblyman said that a total of 120 riders from all over Sarawak participated in the two-day (Dec 10-11) competition.

“It was an annual event held here in Sibu, however due to the pandemic it was halted for two years and now it is coming back for its fifth year’s run.

“As you see this event gets a very good response from the public, especially the youth. It also creates business opportunities for the locals as well as homestay as these people (who come from outside Sibu) stay overnight there.

“We must have a lot of events as such that can create opportunities and boost the economy in Sibu. Of course, we cannot obliquely polish the illegal racing but this is one of the ways to make them more disciplined,” he said.

Also present was the political secretary to Sarawak Premier, Sayed Azmee Wan Junaidi.
