SIBU: A private school teacher has fallen victim to a non-existent investment scam, resulting in a staggering loss of RM89,000.

The incident came to light after the 30-something victim lodged a police report on Friday (July 21).

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said the victim met a girl known as `Joyee Yap Jia Yuan’ through the Tantan app.

“A few days later, the suspect invited the victim to make a gold investment, which promised about 18 per cent profits from the total investment capital made.

“The victim was told to download the BFMDTRADE app and was given an explanation (by the suspect) pertaining to the investment scheme.

“He (the victim) was then instructed to pay investment funds to a few accounts,” said Mohd Azman in a statement yesterday (July 22).

He added that without a shadow of a doubt, the victim proceeded to transfer RM89,000 into different bank accounts via 18 transactions between April and May.

Despite his substantial investments, Mohd Azman said the victim never received any profits from the investment scheme.

At this point, the victim began to suspect foul play and realised that he had been cheated.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property.

Upon conviction, the offender can be sentenced to jail for a term of up to 10 years, whipping, and is also liable to a fine.

In the meantime, Mohd Azman advised the public to only invest on platforms that are registered with Bank Negara Malaysia and the Malaysia Securities Commission, besides getting financial advice only from registered agents.

“People should not easily believe in any investment scheme that offers high profits in a short period of time,” he stressed.
