SIBU: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate for Lanang parliamentary seat, Wong Ching Yong’s proposal to build an aquatic centre in Sibujaya has become a reality following the approval from Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

According to Wong, Abang Johari had announced that he has agreed to the project during a meet-the-people session at Ulu Sg Merah here last Monday night.

“This is good news not only for Sibujaya residents but the people of Sibu,” he said in a press conference today (Nov 15).

Wong said that the aquatic centre will be equipped with an Olympic size swimming pool and an international standard diving pool with a total cost of RM52 million for the whole project.

“I met Premier yesterday morning with draft of the project before he announced it last night. He also wants to see more Pandelelas as well as Olympic and world champions be produced,” he said.

Wong said that with the facility, Sibujaya would become a sport centre as it already has an international standard stadium.

Wong had previously said he will fight for a RM1 billion federal allocation if he wins the election. Among the projects planned is the aquatic centre.

“Another good news is Abang Johari has agreed to a grant of RM1 million to Citizen Middle School to rebuild its hostel which was destroyed in a fire in 2020.

“The school has collected RM160,000 from donation which is not enough. The premier said his deputy, Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian will make the necessary arrangement on the grant,” he said.
