SIBU: Jalan Pahlawan will be renamed as Jalan Robert Lau Hoi Chew this June, in honour of the late politician who had contributed a lot to the town’s development.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh said that a full council meeting would be held on May 21 before the implementation.

“The proposal to rename Jalan Pahlawan to Jalan Robert Lau Hoi Chew was approved through the Sarawak Executive Council (Majlis Mesyuarat Kerajaan Sarawak) in February 2023.

“Therefore, all the main roads, including Jalan Pahlawan will be changed to Jalan Robert Lau Hoi Chew,” he said here on today (May 11).

Ting said SMC had informed related agencies and would start changing the road signs in each Pahlawan road after the meeting.

“SMC will issue a notice of home address amendment to a total of 333 homeowners affected by the renaming of this road and the owners can now start changing their address with the National Registration Department (JPN),” he said.

The late Lau was a Sibu MP for five terms from 1990.

Lau was also the SMC chairman from 1999 to 2004, who witnessed the extraordinary development in terms of infrastructure facilities and overall cleanliness of the town.

After that, he was appointed as Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government in March 2004, after winning the 2008 general election.

However, after Datuk Seri Najib Razak took office as Prime Minister in April 2009, Lau switched portfolios to Deputy Minister of Transport and passed away on April 9, 2010, a year later due to cancer at the age of 68.
