BINTULU: Tatau must have a unique signature product to become part of the town’s identity that can be sold in a wider market.

This was said by Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Sarawak Bumiputera Law and Customs) Datuk John Sikie Tayai.

Speaking to 150 participants at the Agriculture Community Outreach Programme (AgriCOP) at Dewan Sukan Tatau today, he said, the people in this district (Tatau), should make a distinctive product, create a brand and commercialise it to increase household income.

He added, with the “signature” product from Tatau folk, it indirectly helps introduce and promote the town to outsiders.

“Be creative and innovative, adapt to a new way of life in selling products to help increase household income,” he pointed out.

Sikie also stressed it was crucial in empowering women in Tatau district through handicraft skills to improve their incomes.

“This, I believe, provides alternative lifelong skills and training so that they can contribute to their household income,” Sikie, who is also Kakus Assemblyman, pointed out.

Women in Tatau are very much talented in handicraft making, thus this is one of the opportunities that they can explore more and perhaps get it commercialised, he said.

At the end of the programme, Sikie also presented 600 durian seeds to 15 longhouses within Kakus constituency.
