KUCHING: Young people have been urged to spend more time with their parents and not to just leave them at home or send them to an old folks’ homes.

Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian gave the advice while officiating at Vivacity Megamall’s Christmas and Winter Solstice celebration during last weekend.

“Treasure the moment. Do not wait until it is too late and then, you will regret. This society needs more care and warmth,” he added.

He also urged youths to stay engaged and connected with their families and friends, increase mutual understanding, enhance relationships and friendship with them and not to spend the day with technological gadgets only.

Dr Sim also urged members of the public to be more conscious of their health, to exercise more in order to prevent heart diseases and avoid obesity.

Malaysia, he pointed out, was considered as the fattest nation in South East Asia (SEA).

“Our diets and lifestyles are the main reasons. Hence, taking care of their diets and eating habits, exercise more and maintaining healthy bodies and minds are the major tasks for Malaysians,” he said.

The Christmas and Winter Solstice celebration was organised by Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Pending branch’s women’s and youth sections.

Organising chairlady Judy Kho expressed her gratitude and joy that the “Christmas Fun 3.0” and Winter Solstice celebration were carried out successfully at Vivacity Megamall on Sunday.

She explained that the main purpose of the activity was to encourage participation of people of different races and to build a united and harmonious society.

At the event, besides playing games and winning prizes, the public also learnt to make snowmen out of socks, practised Chinese calligraphy and tasted the rice balls prepared by organiser.

The children also had a fun time with Santa Claus and the clown.
