‘Duduk dan Tonton’ will be screening four best short films from Singapore on March 10.

SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s (Unimas) Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts is organising ‘Duduk dan Tonton’, a film screening event under its Mini Film Festival.

Duduk dan Tonton’, which will be held on March 10, will feature four best short films from Singapore.

Registration will commence at 7.30pm and screening will start at 8pm at Panggung Gemilang, Unimas, ending with a question and answer session. Admission is free and donations are welcome.

One of the interesting short films that will be screened is ‘Chasing Paper’ directed by Shoki Lin. This film is about a mother concerned about her child, who will be sitting in an upcoming exam. The mother takes up a job as a janitor and steals the examination question paper in order to help her son ace his examination.

The other three short films are ‘Lady M’ directed by Tangerine Liu, ‘A Dance for Ren Hang’ by Looi Wan Ping and Sara Tan which expresses depression faced by a photographer through dance, and ‘You Idiot’ directed by Kris Ong.

The latter short film won Best Editing, Best Cinematography, and also Best Original Music at the Singapore National Youth Film Awards.

“This film screening is made possible through S-Express, which involves several programmers from Southeast Asia – including Leong Pui Yee, a festival programmer from Singapore International Film Festival,” said Yow Chong Lee, who is currently engaged with the Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts, Unimas.

S-Express is an effort to introduce and inculcate a love for short films made in Southeast Asia.

This programme started in 2001, is a collaboration between three renowned figures in Southeast Asian cinema, namely Yuni Huda (Singapore), Chalida Uabumrungjit (Thailand), and Amir Muhammad (Malaysia).

Since then, S-Express has been extended to all the countries in Southeast Asia.

“With such great effort done before, we are honoured to bring the best films from Southeast Asia to be screened in Sarawak,” said Yow, who is also one of the programmers for S-Express.
