Six detained for WC Qatar 2022 gambling

KUCHING: A total of six people were detained by police for involving in gambling for the World Cup Qatar 2022.

Among those arrested were three local men and three foreigners during Ops Soga IX conducted by Kuching district police personnel.

“The operations started from November 19 until December 16 this year and a total of 15 inspections were done by our personnel.

“Through these operations, we have managed to arrest six people for gambling during the World Cup Qatar 2022,” said Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah in a statement today.

From the Ops Soga IX, he stated that police had seized a total of RM331 in cash and six investigation papers have opened under Section 6(3) of the Betting Act 1953.

Two suspects were charged under the act whereby, if convicted, they will be fined not more than RM5,000 and in default imprisonment for not more than six month or both.

Four more suspects will be charged after the investigations have been completed. Ashmon said the operations will continue on in eradicating gambling activities in the district.
