Six held for reckless riding and racing

KUCHING: Police here arrested six motorcyclists on suspicion of riding dangerously and racing along Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Rahman Yakub today.

The ‘Ops Samseng Jalanan’ carried out by Kuching traffic police, the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Division and Gita police, took place from 11pm yesterday to 9am this morning.

Kuching OCPD ACP Ahsmon Bajah in a statement, said the suspects were spotted performing dangerous stunts and competing with each other on the road.

“The police instructed all six men aged between 17 and 24, to pull over to be detained.

“All of them were taken to the Kuching police headquarters (IPD) for further action under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“If convicted, they can be fined up to RM15,000, sentenced to jail for up to five years as well as face licence disqualification for up to five years,” he said.

Throughout the operation, Ahsmon said the team had inspected a total of 60 motorists from 53 vehicles.

From there, a total of 176 traffic summonses were issued by police to the motorists for various offences.

Among them are riding or driving without a driving licence, not having licence plate, no road tax, expired road tax, non functioning brake lights, modified exhaust system and no side mirror.
