KUCHING: Sarawak recorded six new positive Covid-19 cases yesterday, bringing the tally of cases to 997.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said five of the cases were reported in Kuching and one in Lawas.

Two cases, Case 993 and Case 994, involving locals were detected through self-screening at a private health facility on Nov 9 ; they had visited several places in the Kuching associated with previous positive cases.

Case 993 did not show any signs or symptoms but Case 994 has been coughing since Nov 6. Both cases did not have any travel history outside Sarawak.

These cases, categorised as local infection cases, are currently under investigation and contact tracing is in full swing.

“Meanwhile, three new positive cases (Cases 995, 996 and 997) were detected from close contacts in the Greenhill Cluster.

“All three cases have come in contact with Case 988 which was reported yesterday. These cases are Case 988’s in-laws and grandchild who is just six months old.

“The cases underwent screening at a private medical laboratory in Kuching on Nov 9 and were found positive on the same day.

“All three cases show mild signs and symptoms. They are categorised as local infection cases and are third generation cases in the Greenhill Cluster,” the committee said.

All cases in Kuching have been admitted to the isolation ward in Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for further treatment.

SDMC disclosed that one new positive case was reported in Lawas. Case 992 involved a local woman who underwent screening after returning from Sabah on Oct 28.

The case has been in Sabah since Aug 16 to attend basic medical courses at the Health Ministry Training Institute, Sabah.

The case returned to Sarawak through Merapok Immigration and Customs Quarantine Complex (ICQS) and was immediately admitted to the quarantine centre upon arrival in Lawas for a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

In her first screening on Oct 30, she was found negative. She went for her second screening on Nov 7 and was found positive on Nov 9.

“The case started experiencing sore throat and fever on Nov 8 during the quarantine period. The case has been referred and admitted to the isolation ward at Miri Hospital for further treatment,” the committee said.

SDMC added that 12 cases had recovered and had been discharged from SGH — bringing the total number of recovered and discharged cases thus far to 840 or 84.25 percent.

As of yesterday, there were 138 individuals receiving treatment at hospital isolation wards throughout the state — 107 in SGH, 27 in Miri Hospital and two each in Bintulu Hospital and Sibu Hospital.

“Seventeen person under investigation (PUI) cases have been reported while two are awaiting laboratory results.

“There are no cases receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU). The death toll in the state remains at 19 or 1.91 percent,” the committee said.
