Six new clusters identified in state

KUCHING: Six new Covid-19 clusters were identified by the Sarawak Health Department today, making the state’s total number of Covid-19 active clusters to 21.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), in a statement today, said the index case for the Geronggang Cluster, a community cluster involving an elderly care centre in Sibu, was case 6,072.

“Case 6,072 is an elderly male resident at the care centre. He was found Covid-19 positive on Feb 10 after screening. He was likely to have contracted the virus from the community when he was receiving treatments at a medical centre in Sibu.

“Through the active case detection (ACD) conducted at the care centre, 41 Covid-19 positive cases including the index case were discovered. There was one death involving a 73-year-old resident, but the cause of death is still pending,” said the committee.

Mas Merah Cluster in Sibu is also a community cluster involving an elderly care centre at Jalan Teng Chin Hua in Sungai Merah.

“The index case for this cluster is case 6,689, a local woman who works at the care centre. She was traced through screening of individuals who had close contacts with a Covid-19 positive case on Feb 13.

“An ACD was then conducted involving the residents and workers at the care centre. Ten individuals were Covid-19 positive while 38 more individuals are awaiting their results,” said SDMC.

Univista Cluster in Samarahan is a community cluster involving three localities in the district, namely Kampung Muara Tuang, Taman Univista and Taman Samarax as of now.

“Case 6,295 is the index case for this cluster and he is a 33-year-old local man who was found Covid-19 positive through screening of symptomatic individuals on Feb 6. He is a hawker selling satay within his residential area at Taman Univista.

“Through contact tracing and ACD conducted in the three main localities, there are 45 Covid-19 positive cases including the index case while 96 individuals tested negative and 43 other individuals are still awaiting their results,” said SDMC.

Meanwhile, Kampung Sungai Maong Cluster in Kuching involves residents in Kampung Sungai Maong within the city.

“The index case to this cluster is case 6,292, a 38-year-old local woman, who works as a security guard at Sarawak General Hospital. She was found Covid-19 positive after going through screening of symptomatic individuals at a health clinic in the city on Feb 11.

“Through contact tracing and identifying of her colleagues, 17 more Covid-19 cases were recorded. There are 32 individuals who are waiting for their results,” said SDMC.

Gelong Cluster in Kapit is a community cluster involving the community in Taman Sri Gelong at Jalan Selirik.

“The index case is ase 6,581 who is a 47-year-old local man. He was found positive after being screened at a health clinic on Feb 13.  

“Investigations found that the case and his close family members attended his father’s funeral from Jan 30 to Feb 2. As of today, 86 individuals were screened, 14 were found Covid-19 positive and 72 are awaiting their test results,” said SDMC.

Kidurong Dua Cluster in Bintulu is a community cluster and workplace involving a primary school in Kidurong.

“Case 6,184 is a 36-year-old woman who was screened on Feb 9. The index case is a student management assistant at the primary school. Of the 74 individuals who were screened, 12 individuals including the index case were found Covid-19 positive while 62 individuals were found negative,” said the committee.

SDMC added that the State Health Department had declared the end of Keranji Tabuan Cluster in Kuching.

“This cluster has ended as there have been no new cases recorded within 28 days from the date of the last case was identified. Of the 181 individuals who were screened under this cluster, 15 cases including the case index or 8.29 percent were found Covid-19 positive.

“All 15 cases were discharged and allowed to go home. There was no death reported involving this cluster,” said SDMC.
