LUNDU: Six trekkers, two of them foreigners, were rescued after they were trapped in a mangrove swamp during high tide in Rambungan Sempadi yesterday (Mar 10).

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighters from Petra Jaya station were dispatched to the scene after being alerted at 1.25pm.

Preliminary information said the group had been trekking in the mangrove swamp near Rambungan jetty when the incident occurred.

The rising tide complicated the situation, making it difficult for them to get out of the swamp, prompting them to seek assistance from the authorities.

Firefighters, aided by personnel from Telaga Air Safety Water Rescue Team (SWART), initiated a search and rescue (SAR) operation, utilising a creek to access the stranded trekkers.

The trekkers, aged between 23 and 42, were located at 3.30 pm, and they were rescued from the swamp at 4 pm.
