Six years, 10 lashes for syabu possession

KUCHING: The Sessions Court here sentenced a local man to six years in prison and 10 lashes of the whip for possessing 35.22g of syabu at his residence in Taman Malihah, Matang in November last year.

Judge Mohd Taufik Mohd @Mohd Yusof meted out the order against the accused, Ibrahim, 36, after he pleaded guilty to charges framed under Section 39A (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The section provides for life imprisonment or not less than five years in prison and not less than 10 lashes of the whip if convicted.

According to the charges, he was prosecuted with possessing the prohibited substance in a house in Taman Malihah, Matang around 11.30 am on Nov 10 last year.

Mohd Taufik ordered the accused’s sentence to run effectively from the date of his arrest on Nov 10.

According to the facts of the case, a team from Padawan Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) raided a house in Taman Malihah and arrested a local man (accused) believed to be involved in substance abuse activities.

Inspections were carried out in two rooms and the accused tried to prevent the police from inspecting the contents of a red recycling bag.

Further examination found a plastic packet containing crystalline substance believed to be syabu.

The item was taken to the Chemicals Department which confirmed it was methamphetamine weighing 35.22g.

DPP Danial Mohamad Ali prosecuted the case while the accused was unrepresented by a counsel.
