KUCHING: The rewiring of SK Kampung Haji Baki school blocks were completed last month at a cost of RM50,000.

Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, who allocated the money, inspected the rewired buildings yesterday.

“I visited the school six months ago and was told that there were sparks in the buildings when it rained.

“Therefore, under the advice of the school headmaster and the Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG), I immediately pledged RM50,000 for the rewiring works,” he told reporters after inspecting the school yesterday.

Lo, who is also Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman, thanked the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government for continuing the construction of a new building block for the school.

“This new school project costing RM25 million was approved by the previous government.

“And I’m happy to note that the project is going ahead under the new government. For that we must thank the new government,” he said.

The new school building will have four storeys with 18 classrooms. It is expected to be used in August next year.

When the project commences, the current school block will be demolished. Teachers and pupils will be housed temporarily in another block which was built using the Industrialised Building System (IBS). The temporary block is adjacent to the current school block.

However, Lo was concerned about the temporary block as it has some defects such as leaking roof and cracks on the floors although it was built in 2017 at a cost of RM2 million.

“The temporary block was done by irresponsible contractors from Malaya. They did not comply with the specifications,” he said.

He added that there is still no occupational permit (OP) for the building although the architect has applied for it from MPP.

“We cannot issue the OP because they have not completed the building according to approved drawings,” he stressed.

The temporary block has seven classrooms.
