KUCHING: Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Pulo is set to become a modern school, equipped with information communication technology (ICT) facilities that fit well into the 21st-century classroom setting once completed in December 2022.

Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs and Kuching North City Commission), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said this would set SK Pulo apart from other schools when Smart School and Learning Management System is used in the school’s administration.

“At the same time, a cluster type of table layout arrangement that fits into the 21st-century classroom setting will be used to provide a conducive learning environment for the students,” he added.

Apart from integrating the use of ICT, Dr Abdul Rahman disclosed that the new school which was relocated to the Darul Hana housing development area would also provide other facilities such as library, multi-purpose area, assembly square, sports hall, canteen, surau, IOT Wifi, smart street lights and CCTV, multi-purpose hall, parking, pre-school and integrated student-parent waiting and pick-up area for more convenience.

Dr Abdul Rahman, who is also Pantai Damai assemblyman, acknowledged that there would be some challenges in order to achieve the smart school status.

“We need to educate the school administrators, teachers, students and parents on the utilisation of smart technologies in school and this can be done through regular training to equip them with the necessary knowledge,” he pointed out.

The new school will be able to accommodate 900 students in 30 classrooms.

“Our teachers were not trained to teach English, mathematics and science but they are teaching these subjects in schools.

“So, we cannot blame the teachers or the schools. We have to blame the system,” he said.

Manyin added that the high rates of the teacher turnover in rural school had also contributed to the unequal distribution of the well-trained teachers in the state. “Only 651 teachers are recruited to teach maths and science in rural schools,” he said.
