KUCHING: An Indonesian boat skipper was fined RM1 million in default six months’ imprisonment by the Sessions Court here today (Feb 23) for encroaching into the country’s waters on Feb 8.

Mulyadi@Bujang, 33, pleaded guilty to the charge read before Judge Saiful Bahari Adzmi.

He and a crew member of his vessel failed to inform the authorities via radio, telex, or fax in either Malay or English about the name, flag, location, quantity of fish caught, route and destination, and the condition of the boat entering Malaysian waters.

They committed the offence 74.6 nautical miles from Tanjung Sirik, Sarawak, which is Malaysian fishing waters, at around 10.55 pm on Feb 8.

Saiful Bahari imposed a fine of RM100,000 or six months’ imprisonment on crew member Ahmed Sarifulah, aged 42.

The prosecution of the case was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhamad Azham Marwan while both defendants were not represented by lawyers.
