KUCHING: The media world continues to grow with the promise of mobile journalism.

Chief Trainer of Singapore Media Academy, Augustine Anthuvan, thus encouraged journalists to use their smartphones for news gathering and storytelling.

“This will enables reporters to capture the rawness of a story on the go, forging a more direct connection with audiences.

“Journalists act as the voice of the voiceless, asking difficult questions to supply the public with critical information,” he said.

He said this when presenting his talk on “Mobile Journalism: A Catalyst for Social Impact” at the Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC) 2024 here on Sunday.

Augustine said that journalists need to remember the two words – mobile and journalism — and to understand that it’s a combination of audio and visual while engaged in mobile journalism.

“Another important thing about mobile journalism as a catalyst for change is to create social impact.

“I recommend you read up on how we need to create awareness, analysis, reflection and action.

“Most of us, we stop at analysis. There is not enough reflection. And action is not to save the world. Action is just one thing at a time,” he said.

He added that as for awareness, there are several things such as viewer, listener and reader.

“In analysis, it provides time for the journalist to figure out how this issue came out to their community and start thinking.

“Reflection is the hardest because most of the readers, viewers and listeners never reach this stage.

“People come back to us  and want to know more about this story. Action is an opportunity to formulate some constructive behaviour all the time,” he said.
