Situation in Sibu after Prime Minister Muhiyiddin Yassin announced a “movement control order” (mco) that begins on March 18, which has sweeping measures, such as restricting any form of gathering.

SIBU: Some coffee shops continued to open despite Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhiyiddin Yassin’s “movement control order” (MCO) announcement that went into effect yesterday.

Fewer people are seen in Wisma Sanyan after MCO came into effect.

Even though the streets were much quieter, folk here were still seen having breakfast in coffee shops.

Commenting on the issue, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting said it might be too early for the people to comply fully with the order since it was only the first day.

Nonetherless, he urged the folk here to immediately comply for their own good and the good of others.

“Do not think you will be okay. The sad thing is if you get infected, your family and friend will be next. Therefore, let’s all comply,” he said.

“In any case, I can see that many coffee shops are closed. Very few do not comply probably because they are not too sure about the requirements. It is still early stage to say I am disappointed. I am driving around the town and see many shops are closed, but I will not hesitate to tell off those who aren’t complying.”

He said he noted that some of the coffee shops opened to cater for home delivery service only.
