SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has urged the public to have some regard for the work put in to decorate the Christmas trees at Dataran Tun Tuanku Haji Bujang.

Its Chairman, Clarence Ting said that schools had worked tirelessly to design and use sustainable materials as their decoration for the Christmas trees.

“I don’t like to address this thing on the internet, on Facebook, and social media but there are some people who talk about the particular design and what not. This design comes from different organisations and in this case, it was the schools.

“I think we should all respect the design and I think the public should refrain from making judgments on them because these are school students who put in a lot of work to show their Christmas spirit.

“Let’s not trample on our Christmas spirit, let’s enjoy this Christmas,” he said when met by reporters after officiating the lighting of the giant Christmas tree and the eight Christmas trees here last night (Dec 9).

The eight Christmas trees were put up by contestants of the Christmas Tree Decoration Contest organised by SMC.

The eight institutions taking part are Zion Methodist Church, Catholic High School, Sacred Heart Cathedral, University of Technology Sarawak, Xin Fu Yuan Methodist, SMK Methodist, SM Wong Nai Siong, and SMK Kampung Nangka.

“I am so proud of the schools that can do this … I invite the public to come and take a photo with all the trees and I want to wish everybody in Sibu  a merry Christmas and happy new year,” he said.

Ting also invited everyone in Sibu to participate in the New Year Countdown 2023 celebration this Dec 31.

“I can tell you now that the Covid pandemic is over, this year-end season is starting to feel like it is a big holiday coming.

“This year on Dec 31, I invite everybody to come and usher in 2023 here (Dataran Tun Tuanku Haji Bujang),” he said.
