SMC to hold Love Earth Day on 22 and 23 April

SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will be organising ‘Love Earth Day’ on 22 and 23 April at the ground floor of Wisma Sanyan.

The organising chairman Councilor (Cr) Albert Tiang said this would be the ninth year that SMC is celebrating the Love Earth Day and continuing exercise to protect the environment.

He said SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King would officiate at the opening of ceremony of the Love Earth Day on 22 April at 11.00am while Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee would close the event at 3.00pm on 23 April.

“This year, the Love Earth Day will be celebrated in conjunction with our waste segregation campaign, which was launched in February 2017. Therefore, we have decided to adopt the same theme, ‘Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle’ (3Rs) to move towards the same direction.

“As the governance body, SMC has the obligation to join effort with the local communities to educate and create public awareness on local environmental issues. How we could empower everyone with the knowledge to inspire action to protect the environment,” Tiong told a press conference held at SMC office, yesterday.

According to Tiang, the event is supported by Methodist Chinese Kindergarten, SJK (C) Tung Hua, SK Perbandaran No. 4, SMK St. Elizabeth, Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), Department of Environment Sibu branch (DOE), Divisional Health Office (DHO), Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, ZHA Environmental Sdn Bhd and Mentari Alam Eko (M) Sdn Bhd (MAEKO) and Junior Chamber International (JCI) Sibu.

“Among all the participants, we like to highlight three companies, namely, Borneo Metal and Plastic Recycle Sdn Bhd (licensed computer waste collection centre), ZHA Environmental Sdn Bhd (pioneer company collecting used tyres for recycling) and Mentari Alam Eko (M) Sdn Bhd (MAEKO), a corporation providing food waste management solution,” he said.

Besides an exhibition, there will be recycling workshops for the children and adults, children’s public speaking contest, eco-fashion shows, Bubu – Visit Sibu Year 2017 mascot design and children musical performances.

“As we believe in saving the environment, it has to begin with children and it is not an adult only exercises,” said Tiang.

He disclosed that Taiwan Buddihist Tzu Chi Foundation and Borneo Metal and Plastic Recycle Sdn Bhd would be collecting recyclable items, useable old clothing and e-waste at the covered car park at the entrance of Wisma Sanyan during the Love Earth Day.

He invited the public and private sectors, schools, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and members of the public to visit the Love Earth Day exhibition to be held from 10.00am to 9.00pm on 22 April and from 10.00am to 4.00pm on 23 April.
