SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will be upgrading the Sungei Antu marketcentre at a cost of more than RM300,000. Chairlady of the Market & Petty Traders Standing Committee, Cr. Wong Hie Ping said this was the first major upgrading work since the centre began operation 31 years ago.

Speaking at the press conference at the venue yesterday, she said the centre which consisted of six drink stalls and seven food stalls, a vegetable stall and a pork stall, would be improved to provide a more comfortable and conducive environment for the customers to eat and relax.

The centre would feature a new modern design as well as new flooring, Wong said, adding that the upgrading work was expected to take three months.

Meanwhile, the council, she said, would help the stall operators to transport their items to a nearby area at Jalan Tapang where they will operate temporarily. They would start their business operations at the temporary site on March 12 from 5am to 2pm. “But they are encouraged to carry on their business at night,” said Wong.
