SIBU: A woman prison corporal was fleeced of RM2,500 in a love scam here but her plight only came to light after she lodged a police report.

Sibu OCPD ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said that the complainant, aged 40, had in November last year got acquainted with a man who identified himself as Mohd Hassan from Singapore on Instagram.

“After a week of getting to know each other, they continued their chatting on WhatsApp,” he said.

Stanley said the man told her that he would be sending her $100,000, jewellery and handphone.

Then on Dec 29, she received a call from a ‘custom officer’ who informed her that the items had arrived.

She was asked to pay RM2,500 as clearance fee.

Two days later on Dec 31 at 9.15pm, she transferred the said amount to an account number provided by the custom officer.

Stanley said the complainant realised she had been cheated when she was requested to remit more money.

She lodged a police report on Jan 3. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
