KUCHING: The Rotary Club of Kuching Central and the Rotaract Club of Segi College have secured a grant from Rotary District 3310 to set up a greenhouse with hydroponic system for SMK Bandar Kuching No.1.

For the record, Rotary District 3310 comprises Brunei, Singapore and parts of Malaysia (Johor, Malacca, Sarawak, Labuan FT and Sabah).

According to their joint statement, the first objective of the project is to provide a hands-on learning experience for the school’s students on alternative plantation method.

And its second objective is that the vegetables harvested will be sold to local communities nearby and any profits made will be used to provide free meals for poor students.

SMK Bandar Kuching No.1 school principal, Chew Kui Hock expressed his gratitude for realising this project as it has been his idea since two years ago.

“I hope that this self-sustainable project brings good results and wishes to expand the greenhouse to a bigger scale so that the school can plant a wider variety of herbs, fruits and veggies,” he said.
