MIRI: Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) St Columba emerged as the overall champion in the ‘Sukan Rakyat’ category during the sports carnival organised by the Malaysian Scouts Federation (Sarawak branch) at the Miri District level on Saturday.

A total of 2,317 students from 20 primary and seven secondary schools took part in the event held at SMK Merbau.

In the primary school category, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tudan secured the championship in the “Sukaneka” event, followed by SK Kuala Baram in second place and SJKC Chung Hua Lutong in third.

The event also included a special category for children with special needs, where SK Pendidikan Khas took the top spot, followed by SK Miri in second place and SK Kuala Baram II in third.

The prizes were presented by the Commissioner of Miri District Scouts, Mary Karl.

Nine ‘Sukan Rakyat’ events were contested, including activities like straw and rubber band challenges, ping pong ball balancing on a spoon, three-legged races, water bottle filling games, ‘galah panjang,’ fund games with marbles (tikam guli), throwing and grabbing pebbles (Batu Seremban), bowling with coconuts, and flip-flop throwing games.

The sports carnival simultaneously happened in all districts across Sarawak on the same day.
