MUKAH: Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) St Patrick Robotic Team performed satisfactorily during the weekend’s Borneo International Drone and Robotics Explore (Robotex) 2019 in Kuching.

The team that comprised Form 4 student Daniel Tay Hong Yong and Awang Muhammad Danish Hazim Awang Zulkepli (Form 2) was the runner-up winner and received RM1,200, silver medal and certificate of excellence.

They were guided by teacher cum mentor Ismandi Dillah and assisted by a supporting staff member Ahmad Aishamuddin Abdullah.

Ismandi said this year was the first time the team participated in the Drone Delivery Service school category competition where 32 teams took part.

He pointed out that the school did not hope very much that the team would win anything because of certain constraints such as lack of facilities and fund as well as limited time for training.

“In spite of the constraints, the determined and confident boys unexpectedly managed to get into the last eight best teams,” he told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

According to him, the competition was very stiff as the team was separated by one point only from the champions SMK Jalan Arang Team 1.

Ismandi said he was very proud of the school’s robotic team although they trained for four days only prior to the competition.

He added that the team thanked school teachers and students led by principal Anthony Poon Teck Huat as well as parents for their support and encouragement.

The three-day (Oct 4-6) event was also attended by several participants from other countries including Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.
